Medtronic appoints new president of cardiology business

Michael J. Coyle will hold the title of executive vice president and work as the group president of the company's cardiology businesses.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota — Device giant Medtronic Inc. has appointed a former executive of rival St. Jude Medical as the new president of its cardiology unit.

Michael J. Coyle will hold the title of executive vice president and work as the group president of the company’s cardiology businesses. He’ll report to Chief Executive Bill Hawkins, according to a statement from Medtronic.

Coyle was president of St. Jude’s cardiac rhythm management division from 2001 to 2007, leading the company’s  pacemaker, implantable cardioverter defibrillator and cardiac resynchronization therapy businesses. From 1997 to 2001, he was president of St. Jude’s catheter division, according to the statement.

He holds an MBA from the Wharton School of Business and a chemical engineering degree from Case Western Reserve University.

In August, Medtronic announced plans to consolidate its businesses into two operating units, with its heart-related businesses in one unit; and the other unit comprises its spinal and biologics, neuromodulation, diabetes and surgical technologies businesses.
