University Hospitals receives $5M donation from former Sherwin-Williams CEO

University Hospitals logoCLEVELAND, Ohio — University Hospitals has received a $5 million donation from the family of a former long-time Sherwin-Williams chief executive.

As a result of the gift, the hospital will name its new Breast Health Pavilion at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in honor of the donors, Shaker Heights couple Jack and Mary Jane Breen. Mary Jane Breen has been receiving treatment for breast cancer, including radiation and two surgeries at UH, according to a statement from the hospital.

“University Hospitals has been vitally important to our family over the years and we wanted to honor and recognize the preeminent medical care we have received from countless UH physicians,” Jack Breen said in the statement.

UH plans to use the gift to help fund its aggressive $1.2 billion Vision 2010 strategic plan, which includes the future UH Cancer Hospital and Center for Emergency Medicine, both at UH Case Medical Center, as well as a new hospital in Beachwood, the UH Ahuja Medical Center in Cleveland. The Cancer Hospital is scheduled to open in 2011.

At 14,000 square feet, the Breen Breast Health Pavilion will be three times larger than the hospital’s current breast center, according to the statement.

A native Clevelander and graduate of John Carroll University, Jack Breen was CEO of Sherwin-Williams from 1979 to 2000.
