Continuing education company Bioforum Applied Knowledge Center Inc. has unveiled 14 training courses it’ll offer throughout the rest of 2010 to Ohio pharmaceutical and medical device professionals.

The courses range in length from one to three days and focus on topics such as best aseptic practices, pharmaceutical project management, outsourcing and worldwide regulatory affairs. The first course is scheduled for Oct. 18.

The courses will be taught at Cuyahoga Community College’s Corporate College East in Warrensville Heights. Israel-based Bioforum’s staff work with 250 experts worldwide who act as faculty to teach courses and training sessions and as expert consultants for pharmaceutical, chemical, biotechnology and medical device companies that need one-on-one help.

Members of BioOhio, the state’s biomedical trade group, are eligible for two-for-one discounts through the end of the year.

Bioforum’s Beachwood office is the company’s first outside of Israel. The company has one Ohio employee, Suguna Rachakonda, an 11-year veteran of the pharmaceutical industry who holds the title of scientific director. Rachakonda’s pharmaceutical experience includes stints with United Therapeutics and Pharmasset.

“Bioforum’s goal is to strengthen the pipeline of knowledge workers in Ohio to support the current and future needs of Ohio’s biomedical industry,” Rachakonda said.

While Northeast Ohio has spent years trying to reshape itself as a medical hub, people from outside the state know the region merely as home of the Cleveland Clinic and the former playground of a certain professional basketball player who’s local popularity has plummeted just a bit in recent months, said Rachakonda, a former New Jersey resident.

“We have to create our own talent,” she said. “Why should we depend on someone from the outside?”

Bioforum was founded in 1998 and announced its Beachwood office last year.
