Two medical device startups get LCCC Innovation Fund grants

A startup that’s developing an oral hygiene medical device and another that’s developing a sterilization device have received grants from the Innovation Fund of the Lorain County Community College Foundation.

Elyria, Ohio-based Biolectrics received a $100,000 grant to work on an oral hygiene device that “painlessly” treats common oral conditions like gingivitis, gum recession and bone loss while optionally whitening teeth, according to a statement from LCCC.

Biolectrics’ $100,000 grant requires a one-to-one match and is designed to help validate the company’s business concept.

Akron-based Sterionics received a $25,000 grant to develop a simple and portable sterilization device. The company says the device comes with a low cost and consumes a low amount of energy. The device works by generating cold plasma to destroy microbes, viruses and fungi without harming tissue or causing discomfort to patients, according to the company.

Sterionics’ $25,000 grant is intended to be used for technology validation, according to the statement.

LCCC obtains its funding from the state’s Third Frontier technology support program and also several Northeast Ohio sources.
