CleveMed licenses home sleep monitoring system to Midmark

Cleveland Medical Devices has signed a deal to license its home sleep monitoring technology to health equipment distributor Midmark.

The SleepView monitor, which has already obtained regulatory clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, can help doctors conduct home sleep tests and make better treatment decisions for patients suffering from obstructive sleep apnea, according to a statement from CleveMed.

“This is extremely significant for us,” said CleveMed president Hani Kayyali. “As a small company, there’s only so much market penetration we can do.”

CleveMed was already selling the monitor in a few states, but thanks to Midmark’s wider sales and marketing reach, the device is now available all across the country, Kayyali said.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a condition in which the flow of air pauses or decreases during breathing while the person is asleep because the airway has become narrowed or blocked. It can lead to depression, hyperactive behavior in children and, in severe cases, swelling of the legs.

“We want to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of care for patients with OSA by providing another diagnostic option, which enables patients to be tested in the comfort of their own bed and convenience of their own home for a more natural night of sleep,” said Tom Treon, senior product manager with Versailles, Ohio-based Midmark.

The SleepView monitor is smaller and lighter than competing home sleep monitors, according to CleveMed.

In addition to the monitor, Midmark has licensed from CleveMed a web portal that allows physicians to manage sleep study data, and access technicians and board-certified sleep physicians who provide scoring, professional interpretation and treatment recommendations.

The target customers for the SleepView monitor are physician practices and sleep centers, Kayyali said.

CleveMed sells a variety of wireless sleep diagnostic systems.
