The Hay Group in Philadelphia, a management consulting firm that publishes quarterly surveys on physician and drug company compensation, has named Bill Quirk as director of its US Healthcare practice.

He joined  Hay Group in January 2010 as the director of business development for the healthcare practice before serving as the West Coast market leader for the past 18 months.

Quirk said: “I am eager to see us build and expand relationships with providers and payers in all areas of the country so we may help them realize the success they have outlined in their strategies.”

Hay Group’s healthcare practice includes hospitals, health systems, managed care companies and physician groups and focuses on pay, performance, talent and alignment issues.

Earlier this week, the firm published a report that physicians across healthcare institutions could expect to see smaller salary increases in 2012, according to its 2011 Physician Compensation Survey. The report, which covers 144 physician specialties, projected that physicians working in group-based practices would see a 3.2 percent pay rise in 2012, but those working in hospital-based settings would only see a 2.5 percent pay increase compared with 2.7 percent in 2011.

Commenting on the report’s findings, Jim Otto, senior principal in Hay Group’s healthcare practice, said: “Primary care physicians are becoming the quarterbacks of hospitals. The shortage of primary care physicians combined with the anticipated higher reimbursements for primary care and need to oversee the health of a broader population has led to pay increases for primary care physicians outpacing those for specialists within hospitals. Specialists will be the wide-receivers of healthcare, paid well for their craft and deservedly so.”
