We’re in the thick of it now.

The thick of the holidays, that is.

The season offers wonderful opportunities to connect with family and friends combined with a plethora of ways to amplify stress.

For people with arthritis, or any chronic disease, stress can make their pain worse. And fatigue, which often goes hand-in-hand with the season, can put a damper on happy times.

There are ways to boost holiday joy without paying dearly with increased arthritis pain. One of the easiest ways to manage is to keep things simple. For example, if hosting the family holiday dinner is one of your great joys, then enlist help with the cooking and the cleanup. Ditch the cumbersome china and stemware and use festive paper plates and cups instead.

Try following these suggestions for maximizing your holiday enjoyment and minimizing stress: Make a commitment to change your approach to the holiday season and its expectations. Decide what is truly important – preserving traditions for your children, reconnecting with family and friends, attending church services or musical events. Allow yourself to take small steps. Sometimes a few subtle changes can do wonders to reduce the workload, manage expectations and corral stress. Read more at: http://www.arthritis.org/holiday-season-without-holiday-stress.php.
