Copy Dorothy’s style to help people find you at med tech conferences

Not very many people have my skin color in Minnesota, especially in the med tech circles which I flow in and out of as part of my job.

So, whenever I am meeting someone, I simply have to say, “Look out for a short, long-haired woman” and bam, we are done.

But what do you do when you are a white male of average height and organize a large, annual med tech conference? Tons of people fit that physical description.

Frank Jaskulke, director of member services at LifeScience Alley, appears to have taken inspiration from Dorothy.

He wears red shoes.

Jaskulke is not only making a sartorial statement within the sea of navy, gray and black suits that dominate any professional conference, but he’s making the lives of people trying to find him infinitely easier.

It began simply as that — trying to find a way to make himself easily identifiable. But Jaskulke said that even after the conference ended, the CEO of a local startup said, “Don’t stop doing that.” And Jaskulke has taken his advice.

The only pity is that he waits for his shoes to wear out before buying another red pair. The Polo Ralph Laurens on the left is slated to replace the shoes he wears now.

Too bad — I was hoping he would be like the Imelda Marcos of the med tech world.
