Researchers in Spain have found a way to use “bacteria-inclusion bodies” to deliver theraputics at a cellular level. Scientists at the Institute of Biotechnology and Biomedicine and the Online Biomedical Research Centre for Bioengineering, Biomaterials, and Nanomedicine say these “nanopills” can penetrate cells and carry out biological activities.

Even though 543,000 businesses were created each month last year, most of these new companies didn’t hire anyone, according to a study by the Kauffman Foundation. Many people went into business for themselves because of job loss.
Los Angeles, Atlanta and Phoenix were the cities with the most new startups among the nation’s 15 largest metro areas.

The new depression drug that AstraZeneca and Targacept were testing in Phase III trials has failed again. The last two of four late-stage studies failed to meet primary endpoints.

A supermarket chain in Texas is hiring dieticians to staff a $1 million in-store wellness program for shoppers and employees. The chain is also getting pharmacists involved by having them talk to customers about the health-and-wellness store tours and the NuVal food scoring system that helps consumers determine the nutritional value of the food.

Hospital consultants speaking at the American College of Healthcare Executives 2012 Congress on Healthcare Leadership said that hospitals should focus on four tenets of accoutability: stewardship, reasonable costs, care to the poor and quality of care. William Cleverley and James Cleverley of Cleverley + Associates focused on non-profit hospitals as they discussed how hospitals could showcase their value to the community.
