A company has developed a bottle that reminds patients to take the medication contained within it to address the burden of noncompliance on the healthcare industry.

The RememBottle enlists a technology used in touch-screen devices to measure how much of the solid or liquid medication a person has taken. If it looks like a patient has missed a dose, the system can send a text, e-mail, or phone call to the patient as well as the healthcare provider, according to Austin Neudecker, co-founder of Digital Medical Technologies.

The goal of the device is to address noncompliance, a huge problem estimated to cost $100 billion in lost revenue for pharmaceutical companies and  more than  $100 billion in hospitalizations. The idea is that pharmaceutical companies would use the company’s device to package its drugs.

The company exhibited at the 14th annual Angel Venture Fair in Philadelphia on May 1.

“Philadelphia is a good market for us — there are a lot of pharmaceutical companies and healthcare facilities here,” Neudecker said.
