Here’s to forward-thinking women in healthcare (Best of MedCitizens)

Every week, MedCity News highlights the best of its MedCitizens: syndication partners and MedCity News readers who discuss life science current events on MedCityNews.com

Now here’s the best of what YOU had to say:

‘Shit, she’s awake!’ A tribute to visionary, innovative women in healthcare. “It is often true that men have more actual experience running companies. We women do far less of that then we should. However, I do not think that necessarily means that we have less experience taking charge and doing the right thing for companies, and toughness comes in many forms.”

Why a doctor on Facebook is better than one that cuts open your heart. “Despite breath-taking advances in medical technology, heart disease remains our number-one killer. Heart doctors should despise this news. They should cringe at what they see in their office waiting rooms. I’d love to help — in my small way — knock heart disease down a notch. Achieving that goal won’t come by squishing, stenting and ablating alone. We need to affect the big picture. We must become better motivators. And yes, this is possible. I’ve seen patients flip because of a doctor’s message. It’s beautiful when it happens.”

Patients should risk the label of ‘difficult’ to get the best care. “Interestingly I’ve found that referring physicians don’t have a good sense of how those they are referring to interact with patients. I had one occasion where my primary care doc referred me to a highly regarded surgeon that I perceived to be a pure salesman. I asked him for another referral and found someone much more to my liking. My PCP told me he appreciated my feedback — it wasn’t something any other patient had ever shared with him, and I guess he had probably never asked patients either. If you have a primary care doc you work well with, I would definitely report back on your experience with specialist referrals, because you may end up helping other patients.”

1 in 4 medical sales job seekers forced into job search. “But what is the market like for medical sales job seekers? Massive layoffs and overseas outsourcing have certainly made the market even more competitive, but job seekers continue to persevere, and many of them do so voluntarily. That is, 3 out of 4 medical sales job seekers are voluntarily looking for work. A recent survey found only 25% have been laid off or otherwise forced into the job market.”
