From successful entrepreneurs to doctors turned innovators, MedCity CONVERGE on July 9-10 in Philadelphia offers an opportunity to hear and engage with specialists who have vital insights on the healthcare industry. They will discuss innovation, digital health, entrepreneurship, healthcare delivery and more obstacles and keys to better healthcare.

Five select industry leaders will get a chance to deeply discuss their points of view on medical innovation in 30-minute “fireside chats.” Since the core issues surrounding healthcare come from numerous angles, challenges are often misunderstood and solutions that seem like common sense are flawed. These five talks have been organized so the speakers can can provide everyone a better understanding of the different parts of healthcare.

Title: Collaborative Workflows: Thriving in the Era of Healthcare Delivery Reform

Speaker: Dr. Mark Blatt, worldwide medical director, enterprise solution sales, Intel

Description: Efficiency is the key to ease stress caused by clogged workflow, uncertain growth and issues of sustainability of an organization. Healthcare delivery payment demands cost-effective constant progress. That objective is challenged by unnecessary readmission and unneeded patient visits. This fireside chat, moderated by Travis Good of CatalyzIO, will show an in-depth analysis of those issues and offer solutions to the problems. Good’s company is focused on building products for the health and wellness industry. Meanwhile, Blatt is a worldwide spokesman for Intel and concentrates on how health information technology infrastructure can enable providers to deliver cost-effective quality care to all citizens.

Title: Transforming Health Care Through Innovation

Speaker: Dan Hilferty, President and CEO, Independence Blue Cross

Description: This discussion will explore the vital role innovation plays in tackling two of the biggest problems in healthcare – raising the quality of care and lowering costs with a focus on the importance of partnerships, information sharing and wellness. Hilferty has 25 years of experience in healthcare, government affairs, communications and education. As president of Independence Blue Cross’ sales and health market, Hilferty understands what it takes for innovation to be effective on the industry. Nationally, Hilferty serves on the board of directors for the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. He’ll be joined by moderator Karl Stark, an assistant managing editor for health and science at The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Title: The Future of Care Delivery Models

Speaker: Dr. Nicholas LaRusso, Medical Director, Mayo Clinic Center for Connected Care

Description: The greatest changes in health care will take place in the delivery models. There are enormous opportunities every day but also enormous challenges. Understanding the landscape from both the physician and patient perspectives have never been more critical as new technologies, human behaviors, and policy are impacting care delivery every day. LaRusso, who is the founding director of Mayo’s Center for Innovation and Medical Director, will discuss what he’s learned over the years leading multidisciplinary teams focused on tackling the transformation of experience and delivery of health and health care. His moderator is MedCity Media’s CEO, Chris Seper.

Title: Access – The Great Opportunity and Challenge for the Digital Health Entrepreneur 

Speaker: Dominique Pahud, director, Kauffman Foundation

Description: Pahud will be joined by Christina Sherwood, the editor of Kauffman’s eMed healthcare entrepreneur blog, to discuss how the digital era can improve and pose challenges to the healthcare industry. Digital health is a hot area within healthcare innovation. Many entrepreneurs are now engaged in helping to solve many of the problems we face in lowering cost and improving outcomes of healthcare. Access to the care setting to prototype, refine and deploy innovations remains a challenge. This discussion will explain a few models where entrepreneurs, care teams, patients and institutions are coming together and effectively innovating as a team as well a few ideas of new standards/models where learning and innovation can happened more systematically.

Speaker: Sally Okun, vice president for advocacy, policy & patient safety, PatientsLikeMe

Description: Okun and MedCityNews.com reporter Stephanie Baum will explore what Okun and PatientsLikeMe has learned about from the “true source of innovation – patients” and how healthcare innovation starts with the patient experience. With over 200,000 members, PatientsLikeMe is one of the largest and most active patient networks in the world. Okun, who recently gave one of the best talks at this year’s TEDMED conference, is a member of the Office of the National Coordinator’s HIT Standards Committee Consumer Technology Workgroup; and member of the PCORI Patient Engagement Advisory Panel.
