Electronic medical record companies face plenty of challenges as healthcare reform impacts the medical landscape. Hospitals are absorbing physician practices and health systems are acquiring other health systems. That means electronic health record companies are seeing a certain amount of turnover as clients are lost and gained. Then you have the gains and losses of marketshare when providers evaluate whether to keep or change EHR providers.

Despite those market pressures, Girish Navani, the founder and CEO of electronic medical records company eClinical Works, has been bullish about the company’s growth. In an interview with MedCity News, Navani said he wants to hire 100 software developers (if he can find them) to help support the rollout of care-coordination tools across accountable care organizations, physician practices and its patient portal.

Physician practices are its main customer base. About 60 percent of its business comes from medical practices that already use EHRs but want to change their provider. Here are some of the health IT tools geared for population health and care coordination it has rolled out in the past year.

  • Earlier this year it released the first app in its Healo platform. The iOS and Android app connects patients to their electronic health records. They can also keep track of  doctor appointments, medications, conditions and their providers. It is also designed to improve communication with providers. In February, the company said it would invest $25 million in the platform over a 12-month time frame. Navani said the app has been downloaded 100,000 times since it was launched.
  • Its Join the Network platform is a $10 million interoperability solution to help physicians connect with each other and coordinate care in real time regardless of which EHR platform they use. One use of the platform is to share information on patients’ treatment plans. They can even use it if they don’t yet have EHR systems. The idea is to help providers have more complete and accurate patient information at the time of care.
  • A community analytics tool to support ACOs and patient-centered medical homes uses clinical decision support alerts to call attention to potential patient problems earlier. It was developed as part of a project with the New York City Department of Health. The Journal of American Medical Informatics Association offers an in-depth view of it.

Last year it became the NFL’s electronic health record provider. In 2009, eClinical Works added Correctional Medical Services in St. Louis — a group that manages medical services in 10 statewide systems and provides healthcare services to prisoners in 17 states.
