With the Baby Boomer generation entering retirement, the number of people in need of extended care is set to rise. HBO has set its sights on healthcare for a new comedy series it has adapted from a British television series.

Here’s a description of Getting On from the website HBO Watch:

Based on the hit British series, the show is set in the women’s extended-care facility of a Long Beach hospital and follows the daily lives of put-upon nurses and doctors as they struggle with the darkly comic realities of caring for the elderly in an overwhelmed healthcare system. Laurie Metcalf, Alex Borstein, Niecy Nash and Mel Rodriguez star; guests stars include Molly Shannon, Daniel Stern, Harry Dean Stanton, June Squibb and Irma P. Hall.

If the preview clip is anything to go by, dark comedy prevails. It might prove to be too grim and hit too close to home for some. But comedy could be a good vehicle to highlight current trends in healthcare and frustrations with how it is delivered. It’s set to premier November 24.
