When selecting digital health startups for its second accelerator class in Chicago, Healthbox put a focus on B2B companies addressing the post-reform challenges that hospitals and health systems are facing.

Seven companies were chosen, expanding Healthbox’s portfolio to a total of 55 companies.

Several are focused on empowering providers to create a better patient experience. PatientConnecter, for example, creates custom, patient-facing mobile apps to help providers achieve the triple aim of better population health, higher patient satisfaction and reduced costs. Another company, Purple Binder, centralizes all of the community resources that patients need, so that healthcare providers can help patients find social support at the point of care based on their income and other demographic information. Quietyme assists hospitals with improving their patients’ sleep experience by monitoring noise levels, temperature and humidity in rooms.

Other companies focus on automating or improving administrative workflow in a hospital.  Ludi offers a software solution to manage a growing number of physician-hospital agreements, to ensure that the expectations of the agreement are fulfilled and regulatory violations are avoided. Ceuticare, meanwhile, focuses on improving treatment of patients with chronic disease – and allowing physicians to see more chronically ill patients in less time – by making pharmacists part of the point-of-care team. When they’re on-site at a hospital or doctor’s office, pharmacists can evaluate, treat and coach chronically ill patients about their medications, plus meet with pharmaceutical representatives and track and report patient outcomes.

The remaining two startups provide health services remotely. Learn It Live already has an impressive roster of clients, including the American Heart Association and Alere. It connects groups to real-time online health and wellness classes led by experts. Opternative, meanwhile, is on a mission to develop the world’s first online eye exam so that consumers could order prescription glasses and contact lenses from their home.

Healthbox has several health system partners across the Midwest and just signed on State Farm as a strategic sponsor. It’s concurrently running an accelerator program in Nashville that’s set to wrap up next month.
