Awful but funny: Talking weight loss app dishes out insults to help you lose weight

The meanest weight loss coach ever has landed in the app store, and her name is CARROT Fit.

It’s a simple app that uses manually entered data to calculate BMI and track a user’s weight over time. But instead of incorporating game mechanics or social interaction or a wearable device, it adds a slightly different layer than most apps of its kind: ridicule.

Only suitable for use by those “chubby humans” with a good sense of humor, the talking weight tracker offers “rewards” like only slightly offensive teasing (“Look at you, meatbag!”) when the user sheds weight. But she turns up the insults if the user packs on the pounds.

Apparently, a few more substantial, fitness-related modules like a six-minute workout are in the works for future versions.

The CARROT approach is definitely not for everyone, but its novelty is pretty compelling. I, for one, forked over the two bucks just to try it out and am strangely looking forward to what snarky remarks the AI will have for me tomorrow.

The app is available in the app store for $1.99 along with CARROT’s to-do list and alarm apps, which also have the same judgmental AI.
