athenahealth’s program More Disruption Please began life as a network for entrepreneurs, academics and healthcare industry professionals to share ideas to disrupt healthcare a few years ago. It later expanded into a marketplace of health It and digital health companies. It recently added an accelerator. Now More Disruption Please accelerator is looking for some healthcare startup applicants — the more disruptive, the better.

The accelerator isn’t interested in early-stage companies that got their start over a Startup Weekend months ago. It wants more mature healthcare startups that are ready to scale. Participants get eight to 12 months of free office space at athenahealth’s Watertown, Massachusetts campus, seed funding, and ongoing mentorship from athenahealth experts, advisors-in-residence, and partners, according to a company statement. The accelerator also gives portfolio companies exposure to a network of more than 55,000 healthcare providers. Participants gain access to and test athenahealth’s APIs.

Kyle Armbrester, vice president of business development for athenahealth, explained its strategy in a blog:

“Each year, a growing number of start-ups graduate from health IT accelerator programs with a mature solution that’s ready to launch. Yet, many of these companies never make it from seed funding to Series A and they lose momentum. Our aim with the MDP Accelerator is to help reverse this troubling trend by continuing the work of many well-respected accelerators like Blueprint Health and Healthbox: taking products from concept to reality by bringing these proven solutions to market – specifically, to more than 55,000 providers on our cloud-based network.”

The accelerator accepts applicants on a rolling basis. Here’s a link to submit an application.

athenahealth established the More Disruption Please network in 2010, which has grown to 2,500 members who provide access and connectivity to innovative solutions in healthcare. The network also hosts conferences and hackathons. Last year, it started the Marketplace program to integrate desirable technologies into its cloud-based network to offer complementary services to enhance athenaNet.
