A healthcare business that began as a way to integrate video with electronic health records and recently added a mobile health channel using “video selfies” as a way to verify, validate, and document patient compliance, has closed a new round of funding.

CareCam Health Systems raised $2.4 million, according to a Form D filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Its V Health System channel encourages patients with chronic conditions to demonstrate adherence with videos, particularly for chronic conditions such as diabetes, and receive feedback from medical staff, according to the website. An estimated 133 million Americans have at least one chronic condition.

Hal Rosenbluth, the CEO, declined to comment on the fundraise.

For example, diabetics are encouraged to use their mobile phones to video self-administered foot exams. That would be especially useful for people with diabetic neuropathy to detect ulcers that could lead to costly hospitalization if left unchecked. The idea is not only to provide a way to engage patients but also to give nurses and physicians a way to guide patients to help them with adherence. It’s also intended to allow doctors to guide patients to video post-surgery wounds and swelling or rashes to catch problems earlier before they become costlier to fix.

On the flip side, doctors could send patients videos to help them better understand their condition and the steps they can take to better manage their health.

Last year, CareCam raised $10 million from 21 investors.  Although the company was started in Greenville, South Carolina in 2004 by registered nurse Shannon Pierce, the company’s address in the Form D is listed as Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, a Philadelphia suburb.
