Some healthcare accelerators have been gradually warming up to accepting applicants that do not fill the criteria of a relatively short path to commercialization. Although there are plenty of health IT and mobile health companies, in an increasing number accelerators they sit alongside medical device, diagnostic and even biotechnology businesses. Health Wildcatters, a Dallas-based accelerator, reflects that trend. As it gears up for its demo day November 18, here’s a look at some of the life science companies in its class of 11 healthcare accelerator companies.

Carevature Medical is a medical device company that developed a set of microdrills for minimally invasive orthopedic surgery, particularly spinal surgery. It was founded in 2011 and is based in Tel Aviv, Israel.

Platform Orthopedics uses 3D scanning and modeling technologies to develop personalized orthopedics devices. The use of 3D printing has generated a lot if interest, particularly for its applications in orthopedics. One FDA-approved device produced from 3D printing was a skull from Oxford Performance Materials referred to as OsteoFab Patient Specific Cranial Device. For its part the founders of the Israeli company are focused on feet, specifically clinical orthotics for high risk feet patients and diabetic ulceration patients.

Lantern Pharma is developing a chemotherapeutic drug for multidrug resistant prostate and ovarian cancers using using irofluvens. It is also developing a genetic test to help determine its suitability for each patient. Members of the group come from Biological Mimetics, a Maryland based biotechnology company developing antigens, vaccines and antibodies. Peter Nara is the president and chairman of Biological Mimetics.

Sintact Medical Systems is developing a non-resorbable film that prevents internal scar formation. It acts as an adhesion barrier and is designed to avoid complications from surgery. The company hails from Chicago.
