Human API, a technology company that’s helping advance the discussion of how patients access their health data and what they do with it, has raised more than $6.6 million from 16 investors, according to a Form D filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

CEO Andrei Pop declined to comment on the fundraise for the Redwood City, California business. But this financing could help support an increase in its employee ranks and product development to court larger clients.

In an interview with Information Week towards the end of last year, Pop said it was adding staff in response to strong demand:

“It has been overwhelming, actually — we currently have much more demand from application developers than we expected; we are hiring like crazy to keep up with demand. What is cool to see is that some of our customers are startups and others are very large health IT vendors or provider groups. Everyone is seeing the value.”

The company developed an API to help retrieve data from medical devices such as blood glucose monitors, fitness trackers, as well as genetic tests and labs tests. But it also lets patients decide which data to share.

Its HIPAA-compliant technology is designed to over come some of the biggest challenges of aggregating data from different sources by is ensuring that all of  this information is standardized and normalized for developers.

Human API works with companies such as DrChrono, WellRight and JumpstartMD.

It’s part of a wider trend that’s been welcomed by people interested in tracking their own data, but also and particularly healthcare professionals who want to have a way of monitoring patients between appointments. Other customers like health IT vendors want to provide a way to analyze de-identified data from multiple sources to better understand patient population trends.
