The Mayo Clinic has selected Epic as its vendor of a single, integrated electronic health record and revenue cycle management system, displacing both Cerner and GE Healthcare as the current vendors.

Rumors had surfaced earlier this week that Mayo would move forward with Wisconsin-based Epic, despite the fact that former Mayo CEO Denis Cortese sits on the Cerner board.

The new Epic system will “be a foundation” for Mayo “over the next several decades,” the Minnesota-based health system said in an announcement.

“We’re confident in choosing Epic as our strategic partner as we continue to enhance Mayo Clinic’s excellence in health care and medical innovation,” said John Noseworthy, M.D.

The project team is expected to be in place by April 2015, according to Mayo. The system will be built in 2015 and 2016, with implementation currently planned to begin in 2017. It will include staff from Mayo, Epic and external consulting organizations, according to Cris Ross, chief information officer at Mayo.
