A medical device company that developed a mirror to make it easier for people to change their ostomy pouch, to attach prosthetic limbs and for diabetics to check their feet for ulcers is awaiting FDA clearance for the device, according to a distributor for the company.

The inventor behind the patent pending medical mirror is Ron Dolar, CEO of ADProducts and an ostomy patient himself.

In a phone interview with Jeff Sweat, CEO and cofounder of the distributor Medical Mirror Co., he said the devices are especially geared to help older patients. They might have to rely on a spouse of a caregiver to replace their ostomy bag or to remove a prosthetic limb. “We want to give patients greater independence for life with fewer limitations. So activities like camping are a realistic option.”

The mirrors are designed to be adjustable and easily dismantled, Sweat said. The mirror system is expected to be available in different sizes for home settings, travel and in hospitals.

The Spokane, Washington-based company raised $250,000 from angels to support initial sales and marketing for the mirror system, according to Sweat.
