Scientists are actually collaborating with tobacco companies to build a “healthier” e-cigarette

Scientists are joining tobacco companies to share knowledge about the FDA and other things that will help in creating the best e-cigarette as possible in efforts to reduce use of regular, cancer-causing cigarettes.

It’s common knowledge that regular cigarettes are bad for everyone, but even though e-cigarettes may cause some damage, they’re a better alternative than regular cigarettes.

Scientists have been opposed cigarette companies for years because of the harmful effects tobacco has on the human body. But some scientists are pairing up with tobacco companies in order to produce a “healthier” e-cigarette that reduces lung cancer risks.

Philip Morris International Incorporated hired upwards of 400 scientists and technical staff at its Switzerland research facility. These scientists include toxicologists, chemists, biologists, biostatisticians and regulatory affairs experts.

The makers of Marlboro, Altria Group and independent e-cigarette companies recruited scientific and healthcare experts to better understand the development of the devices and the US Food and Drug Administration.

The Reuters article said one goal is to provide evidence that e-cigarettes reduce the risk of disease. Companies that succeed could have an advantage in a market that Bonnie Herzog, an analyst at Wells Fargo Securities, sees surpassing combustible cigarettes in the US within the next decade.

Philip Gorham, an analyst at Morningstar, said, “If tobacco companies can prove there is reduced risk, e-cigs are likely to remain less regulated and taxed than cigarettes. If they can’t they will likely be subject to the same restrictions.”
