Staring at a screen too long? These glasses are designed to prevent digital eye strain

Companies like JINS Eyewear are capitalizing on the negative effects of the digital screen age by creating glasses to protect against digital eye strain.

The Vision Council estimates that roughly 93 percent of adults look at a digital screen for two hours per day and six out of 10 adults spend five hours per day staring at their phone or computer screen. It can produce problems like dry, red eyes, headaches and even double vision.

To help relieve some of this stress, tech companies have created specific glasses to wear if the user spends a significant part of their day looking at a computer screen.

Japanese business JINS Eyeware announced its plan to launch a new class of eyewear meant to protect against eye strain called JINS SCREEN. The glasses are expected to hit the U.S. market next month, according to a company statement.

It’s intended to combat the effects of blue light from prolonged use of digital devices including computer screens and smartphones, by filtering blue light and helping ease digital eye strain, the statement read.

JINS has already sold upwards of five million pairs of the protective glasses since it’s launch in Japan in 2011. The glasses will be available to U.S. consumers in multiple colors to choose from. The first U.S. store will be located in San Francisco’s Union Square and glasses may also be purchased online.

JINS Eyewear is not the only type of screen protecting eyewear, however.

VC Eyewear provides four different series of glasses that help protect against eye strain caused by digital glare and artificial ultraviolet light produced by electronic devices.

GUNNAR Optiks also provides a design of protective eyeglasses. According to the company’s website, “GUNNAR offers the only patented computer lens technology solution, recommended by doctors, to protect and enhance your vision.”

Even though working in the digital age is seemingly easier than using paper and pencil all of the tim, our eyes are definitely suffering for the convenience. Companies like JINS have recognized the problem with the digital age and have created solutions to a problem more and more people are facing as the presence of technology strengthens in our day to day lives.
