What does health IT workforce want in employers?

According to a new survey and infographic from online jobs board HealthITJobs.com, nearly 75 percent of the health IT workforce intends to consider a new job or career within the next year.

Health IT professionals kinda sorta like their jobs, but many think they and their employers could do better.

According to a new survey and infographic from online jobs board HealthITJobs.com, nearly 75 percent of the health IT workforce intends to consider a new job or career within the next year.

Slightly more than half of those surveyed said that their supervisors were below average in terms of leadership skills, though only 14 percent said their employers needed to improve company leadership.

Health IT pros also tend to be disappointed with their coworkers, or at least indifferent toward them. Even though 89 percent said work relationships have a bearing on their quality of life, just 17 percent said their coworkers were the best part of their jobs. Similarly, 18 percent named work-life balance as the best part.

So what would make health IT workers enjoy their jobs more? According to HealthITJobs.com, based in Alpharetta, Ga., 41 percent of those surveyed said the option of working from home was the No. 1 perk an employer could offer. Another 28 percent wanted flexible work hours above all.

At least health IT workers are paid well. The survey, as summarized in the infographic below, found the average salary among respondents at nearly $90,000 per year. Only a quarter said that they needed to be paid more.
