Dexcom gets CE Mark for G5 continuous glucose monitor

More big news for Dexcom. Its G5 continuous glucose monitor will soon be available for use in several European countries.

It’s a pretty good day for San Diego-based Dexcom. The company announced that it won CE Mark approval for its G5 continuous glucose monitor in the European Union. This means the device will be available in just weeks in several countries.

The company also received pre-market approval from the FDA for the CGM system just last month, which makes it the first device of its kind to send data directly to smartphones that has been approved. This could change the way people with diabetes manage their health dramatically.

Not only does this help individuals with diabetes who want to keep track of glucose levels without using a separate receiver, the device also includes technology that lets users include five other people to have access to the information and receive alert notifications from practically anywhere – perfect for families.

“The Dexcom G5 mobile CGM system lets users see and treat their diabetes in a whole new way – right on a smart device and without the need to perform confirmatory finger sticks for treatment decisions – it’s dynamic glucose information when you want it and where you want it,” president & CEO Kevin Sayer said in a statement. “With an enhanced interface and fully mobile design, the device is changing the landscape of diabetes management, offering users greater convenience, flexibility and discretion than ever before.”

A lot is going on with Dexcom right now. There’s the Google partnership to build a smaller and cheaper glucose sensor. Also, a deal with Apple that will include CGM monitoring apps on the Apple Watch and an agreement with San Diego-based Tandem Diabetes to potentially create a new artificial pancreas.

Surely there will be more news to come in the near future from Dexcom.
