Dietary planning for hospitals, data visualization part of NY Digital Health Accelerator’s latest class

The accelerator’s next class includes some familiar names to MedCity News readers such as a telewound company Healogram, and patient diet planning tool developer, Nutrify.

Few health tech accelerators can make the claim that they’ve had portfolio companies acquired within months of graduation. New York Digital Health Accelerator can — Dave Chase’s Avado and Remedy Systems both got snapped up.

The accelerator’s next class includes some familiar names to MedCity News readers such as a telewound company Healogram, which took part in Blueprint Health’s accelerator. Nutrify has also taken part in the StartUp Health accelerator. It also participated in a “Patient Shark Tank” at the New York eHealth Collaborative’s Digital Health Conference last year.

Here’s a summary of them:

Healogram developed a mobile app to help physicians track wound recovery. Its app can be used in two care settings. The first is a tertiary care setting, after the patient is discharged. By keeping physicians updated with pictures, it avoids the need for patients to visit in person. It could also be used for home healthcare. Its co-founder and CTO is Peter Jackson

Dorsata developed a care collaboration tool for care teams. It comes to New York by way of Washington, D.C., where it took part in the 1776 Challenge Cup. Its management team includes David Fairbrothers, the CEO and self described serial software entrepreneur. Mark Kolb is the chairman.

iVEDIX decided that given the amount of big data being generated there need to be a more efficient way to capture that data and visualize it — a “radical data visualization” generator, by the sound of the company’s description. It has already developed a product for the finance industry and now it is working on healthcare.

Nutrify tackled diet planning but for hospitals. It developed a way for registered dieticians to make sure patient diet recommendations were tailored to their needs, particularly for food-dug interactions. The patients can access this information as well. It also addresses weight management issues, cultural preferences and  budget needs.

A Deep-dive Into Specialty Pharma

A specialty drug is a class of prescription medications used to treat complex, chronic or rare medical conditions. Although this classification was originally intended to define the treatment of rare, also termed “orphan” diseases, affecting fewer than 200,000 people in the US, more recently, specialty drugs have emerged as the cornerstone of treatment for chronic and complex diseases such as cancer, autoimmune conditions, diabetes, hepatitis C, and HIV/AIDS.

Off the Scale is a multipronged, 12-week program to help participants lose weight. It combines in-person group interaction with wearables, an app and social media. The goal is lifestyle change and maintenance.

Wellth is also pursuing behavior change but from the perspective of helping people adhere to a care plan with incentives. It views this approach as an effective way to reduce healthcare costs. It is a little unclear as to how the ‘meaningful rewards” are paid for or obtained, but hopefully the company will clarify that in time. CEO Matt Loper is a biological engineering grad from MIT who also has worked as a healthcare investment banker at Goldman Sachs and as an investor at OrbiMed Advisors. Alec Zopf the CTO previously worked for big data startup the Next Big Sound.
