Sherwin-Williams debuts Paint Shield to prevent spread of bacteria on surfaces

Many infectious diseases could now be tackled by Sherwin Williams' new paint designed to kill certain bacteria for up to four years.

At the Cleveland Clinic Medical Innovation Summit on Wednesday, Sherwin-Williams declared firmly that it’s not just a company focused on new styles and shades of paint – it has a focus on improving wellness.

The company officially announced its new product called Paint Shield, an EPA-registered Microbicidial Paint that according to John G. Morikis, President and CEO, declared will kill 99.9 percent of bacteria on wall surfaces — specifically Staphylococcus, MRSA, E. coli, Vancomycin-resistant enterococci and enterobacter aerogenes.

As Morikis pointed out, this waterborne paint, which was developed with the help of infectious disease experts, actually continuously kills bacteria for up to four years. This product was designed to be used not only in hospitals but also senior care centers, schools, residential spaces and athletic facilities.

Paint Shield will come at a premium. A gallon of Paint Shield, ranging in 590 colors, will cost $84.99 compared to the average Sherwin-Williams indoor paint, which ranges from $29.99 to $79.59.
