TigerText closes $50M Series C round, adds doc to board

VC firm Norwest Venture Partners led the round, joined by repeat investors Shasta Ventures, OrbiMed and Reed Elsevier, as well as new participants Invus Group and Accolade Partners. TigerText also released updates to its apps, including a new one for the Apple Watch.

TigerText, maker of a secure text messaging app of the same name, has raised $50 million in a Series C round of private equity. VC firm  Norwest Venture Partners led the round, joined by repeat investors Shasta Ventures, OrbiMed and Reed Elsevier, as well as new participants Invus Group and Accolade Partners.

As part of the investment, Norwest Principal Dr. Robert Mittendorff, an emergency physician, is joining the board of Santa Monica, California-based TigerText. “More than just secure communications, the TigerText offering has the potential to make healthcare safer and more efficient by reducing errors in physician consults, patient care handoffs and improving group work inside and outside of hospitals,” Mittendorf said in a press release.

The healthcare-focused vendor also announced the release of a new desktop app, featuring a “low-connectivity protocol,” because many healthcare workers are not allowed to carry personal phones on the job. This coincides with a new Apple Watch app and updates to the current iOS, Android and Web apps.

TigerText co-founder and CEO Brad Brooks said that secure, real-time messaging can save the healthcare industry at least $30 billion annually by improving worker productivity and assuring better care continuity. “Caregivers can receive information in a more timely fashion and collaborate instantly across mobile, desktop and wearables, instead of waiting on a phone call or page,” Brooks said.
