HIMSS tries measuring health IT value

HIMSS called the new Value Score "healthcare's first international quality measurement for the value of health IT."

Seeking to quantify the value of health IT and help healthcare providers optimize their IT installations, the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society has introduced a new scale called the HIMSS Value Score. The Chicago-based organization called it “healthcare’s first international quality measurement for the value of health IT.”

HIMSS is positioning the Value Score as an outgrowth of the well-known HIMSS Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model and the HIMSS Value Suite. The latter features more than 900 case studies of providers, communities and Accountable Care Organizations that have been successful with EMRs and other health IT.

“With the move towards value-based care, the international healthcare community can now look beyond initial adoption and toward a broader, all-encompassing way to measure the clinical and financial value of health IT,” HIMSS President and CEO Stephen Lieber said in a statement. “The Value Score is a combination of HIMSS’ core competencies and is the natural next step in the continual evolution towards better care and outcomes for patients and providers.”

The organization said that the Value Score is a work in progress; HIMSS is continuing to refine its measurement algorithms.
