Diabetic children in Europe can now avoid the routine finger prick with availability of Abbott’s new glucose monitoring system

An alternative way of testing glucose levels without finger pricking is a great solution for young kids and teens.

FreeStyle Libre

Abbott has announced that it is moving forward with a new glucose monitoring system in Europe that would allow for testing without continuous finger pricks. By obtaining a CE Mark, the FreeStyle Libre system will now be available for users and is specifically designed to make the process for diabetic kids and teens easier.

It’s a challenge to monitor insulin levels for anyone, let alone a child, and it’s been shown that the pain and discomfort of doing this for younger people can make treatment and consistency with testing harder.

The FreeStyle Libre system reads glucose levels through a sensor that is worn on the back of the upper arm for up to 14 days. Using a device, you scan the sensor to get the reading.

For a lot of caregivers of young kids and teens with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, having the need to monitor night-time hypoglycemia is an additional challenge. This system helps to eliminate that concern.

Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre system is currently available in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
