Glooko amplifies diabetes market reach with Ascensia deal

The move gives Glooko another partner with global reach and reflects the broader trend of connected device companies building diverse ecosystems of these devices.

Glooko has added Ascensia Diabetes Care to its integration partners, according to a news release. The move gives Glooko another partner with global reach and reflects the broader trend of connected device companies building diverse ecosystems of these devices. The idea is to make it easier for these companies’ customers to de-silo, aggregate and view their health data in context, share that data with physicians, and improve diabetes management.

Ascensia secured 501(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration late last year for its blood glucose monitor Contour Next One, which is poised to enter the market this year. Ascensia, formerly Bayer Diabetes Care, was sold to Panasonic Healthcare Holdings last year.

The attraction for Ascensia is Glooko’s broad distribution into health systems, according to a news release. Ascensia customers can use Glooko’s mobile app to access blood glucose data from Ascensia products Contour Next One and Contour Plus One or through a feed from Ascensia’s cloud. Healthcare providers can access patient data from Ascensia’s Contour diabetes app in a way that fits into their workflow through Glooko Clinic Solution, according to the news release.

Ascensia is the latest company to collaborate with Glooko to integrate their technology. Glooko has had a steady stream of announcements for deals with companies such as Roche, Novo Nordisk, and Medtronic. The deal with Novo Nordisk enabled Glooko to gain access to the pharma company’s substantial customer base and educational content. Last year, Glooko acquired Gothenburg-based Diasend to extend its data aggregation capabilities to European customers.
