Andy Slavitt joins healthcare innovation network AVIA as adviser to transform patient care

The role seems like a good fit for Slavitt who in January stepped down from his post as acting administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Andy Slavitt has a new gig as a senior adviser to AVIA Innovator Network, a Chicago-based health innovation network that works with health systems to help them derisk and curate digital health technology to improve patient care.

Eric Langshur, AVIA CEO and cofounder, said in a press statement regarding the hire that the group sought Slavitt for his “unparalleled experience and insight”.

Last year, AVIA secured investment from four health systems including Froedtert Health, Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, OSF HealthCare and Providence Health & Services. The group works with provider members to figure out answers to specific problems and identify appropriate startups for investment.

The role seems like a good fit for Slavitt who in January stepped down from his post as acting administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Among his achievements at CMS, he said, was having 30 percent of physician payments tied to value rather than volume and adding 20 million more people to the insurance rolls. He also sought to improve patient safety with decreases in hospital-acquired conditions. Prior to CMS he worked at Optum as a senior executive.

“One of the principal areas I will focus on is what major healthcare organizations need to do differently for our country to succeed in transforming patient care. We have small scale innovation all over, but until physicians, patients, and systems can absorb and benefit at scale, our healthcare system will remain stalled,” Slavitt said in a statement. “I found AVIA to have one of the highest impact approaches to transformation and am pleased to be a part of this important effort.”
