Medical cornhole tournament set for Aug. 19

Downtown Cleveland has seen some intense athletic contests waged over the years: baseball, basketball, football and now… cornhole.

Say what you will about this humble, much-loved beanbag toss game, but there’s no denying that it brings people together. That’s one of the goals of the Second Annual MedCity News Medical Cornhole Tournament, which will be held on Thursday, Aug. 19 at Gateway Plaza in Cleveland between Progressive Field and Quicken Loans Arena.

Show up at 4 p.m. and you’ll have an hour to triage your competitors from the medical industry. The games begin at 5 p.m. We’ll even play if it rains, but that just makes it all the more challenging. Besides, you wouldn’t want to look like a wimp when the medical professionals from Minneapolis show up.

If you’re not too focused on the game, you can eat some picnic food, which is a standard requirement of all cornhole games. Need to loosen up your throwing arm? Alcohol will be sold, with proceeds going to benefit the Downtown Homeless Fund.

Last year’s cornhole tournament drew more than 100 people from hospitals, medical manufacturers, insurers and other medically related organizations. This year, more than 50 teams have signed up, but we still have room for more. And there’s no high-risk pool. Feeling up to the challenge? Register here through Brown Paper Tickets. For questions about the tournament or healthcare reform, please contact MedCity News. There is a $25 per team registration fee, just to make sure you don’t sign up and go to the beach instead. Attendance is free, but it’ll cost $15 for food, so you might as well play. Heckling is free.

Why should you go? Well, besides the food and fun, you could win something. Raffle prizes will be awarded. And last year’s cornhole tournament winner got a cornhole set, a $100 catering gift certificate and the coveted title of MedCity News Medical Cornhole Tournament champions. This year’s winnings will be even better, but because of HIPAA, we can’t tell you what they’re getting.

Corporate sponsorships for the event are available, too. Join the cornhole-loving folks at Downtown Cleveland Alliance, Thunder::Tech and StudioThink in supporting the event while getting your company name in front of the region’s leading hospitals and medical companies.
