Deciding how to share refunds from the Medicare Shared Savings Program can be one of the more difficult aspects of setting up an accountable care organization. Becker’s Hospital Review outlines seven best practices for figuring this out, including requiring transparency, calculating percentages and developing other revenue streams.

Using financial penalties to reduce infections works, but the policy from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid also has pushed hospitals to concentrate on physician documentation and coding practices instead of enhancing infection prevention. A study in the American Journal of Infection Control shows  that 81 percent of more than 300 surveyed acute care hospitals increased anti-infection efforts as a direct result of the policy.
