Though terms of the deal were not disclosed, the organizations said the combined company will serve almost 100 facilities in 14 states.

Curavi Health, which offers telemedicine solutions for nursing homes, has bought TripleCare, a Long Island City, New York-based provider of telehealth solutions for the long-term care space.

Terms of the acquisition, which is effective immediately, were not disclosed.

From Curavi’s perspective, the aim of the deal is simple: utilize virtual care to assist more patients. The combined company will serve almost 100 facilities in 14 states.

Alissa Meade, the president and CEO of Curavi, will serve as the CEO of the combined organization. TripleCare interim CEO Mary Jo Gorman will take a new seat on Curavi’s board of directors. Leslie Davis, senior vice president of UPMC and executive vice president and COO of UPMC’s health services division, is joining the board as well.

Created in 2016, Curavi Health is backed by UPMC Enterprises, the commercialization and innovation arm of University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. UPMC will continue to be the sole investor in the company, which has over 40 facility clients in three states.

Curavi’s solution consists of a telemedicine cart and video software customized for the use of telehealth in nursing homes. The overall tool enables nursing homes to use their own physicians for telemedicine consults. The ultimate goal is to cut down on unnecessary transfers of nursing home residents to hospitals. As part of a two-year pilot in Pittsburgh-area nursing homes, the startup helped prevent 108 needless hospital transfers.

A Deep-dive Into Specialty Pharma

A specialty drug is a class of prescription medications used to treat complex, chronic or rare medical conditions. Although this classification was originally intended to define the treatment of rare, also termed “orphan” diseases, affecting fewer than 200,000 people in the US, more recently, specialty drugs have emerged as the cornerstone of treatment for chronic and complex diseases such as cancer, autoimmune conditions, diabetes, hepatitis C, and HIV/AIDS.

TripleCare’s approach is comparable to Curavi’s. The Long Island City business relies on its telemedicine platform to give patients in post-acute facilities access to doctors. Again, the goal is to avoid unnecessary hospitalizations and emergency room visits.

In a statement, Meade commented on the acquisition:

By combining the strengths of these two telemedicine leaders in the post-acute care industry, the facilities and residents we serve will have access to the highest-quality care and most innovative telemedicine technology. We look forward to growing our services by integrating TripleCare’s strong network and seasoned team into Curavi Health.
