JLABS head Tom Luby appointed as new TMC Innovation Institute director

Luby takes on the position after serving as site head of JLABS @ TMC, a life sciences incubator that's part of Johnson & Johnson Innovation.

Texas Medical Center in Houston has tapped Tom Luby as the new director of the TMC Innovation Institute, according to a news release sent to MedCity.

He comes to TMC Innovation from his role as site head of JLABS @ TMC, a life sciences incubator that’s part of Johnson & Johnson Innovation. In that role, Luby helped develop an environment for startups to create solutions across the pharmaceutical, medical device and consumer health technology sectors.

Before that, Luby served as new ventures lead at Johnson & Johnson Innovation in Boston.

“I am very excited to begin the next chapter in my journey at TMC Innovation,” Luby said in a statement. “My time at JLABS @ TMC has shown me the tremendous opportunity there is to work with a host of talented people and companies here in Houston. Now, I’m ready to expand my role and help take TMC Innovation as a collective unit to the next level.”

Luby replaces Erik Halvorsen, who was reportedly let go from the TMC Innovation Institute. Prior to Luby’s appointment, Lance Black was serving as interim director.

In his new position, Luby will grow the programs in place at the TMC Innovation Institute, which was launched in 2014. In addition to JLABS @ TMC, the Institute is home to the Johnson & Johnson Center for Device Innovation, the AT&T Foundry for Connected Health, TMC Biodesign and the TMCx accelerator.
