Health information technology company Mednet has elected the former chief executive of MinuteClinic and Arby’s Inc. as the new chairman of its board.
Michael Howe brings health care, technology and operations expertise to the chairman role, according to a statement from Mednet. He joined Mednet’s board in September.
Founded in 2007, Mednet specializes in health information exchanges (HIE), which are computer networks that allow hospitals and doctors to electronically share patient information.
“What excites me the most is Mednet’s focus on ensuring the privacy of patient information and engaging the patient in their own health care information,” Howe said. “I want to help build a company that puts the privacy and security of patient information first.”
Mednet raised about $1.2 million in equity funding last year, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing. Chris Smith, Mednet’s director of business development, declined to disclose further details about the company’s fundraising activities or annual revenue. The addition of Howe to Mednet’s board was made in part to help the company with fundraising, Smith said.
The 15-employee company is trying to win business by helping states set up HIEs, Smith said. Last year’s federal stimulus act included about $30 billion in health information technology funding, with the aim of establishing state-wide HIEs to connect primary care doctors and hospitals.
Mednet earlier this month won a contract from North Dakota to develop strategic and technical plans for its HIE.
