Reflections, reflections. How about some predictions? (Morning read)

Among today's current medical news: Some (finally) predictions for 2011, the coolest medical gadgets from 2010, the worst of medical public relations and some of the last deals of 2010.

Current medical news and unique business news for anyone that cares about the healthcare industry.

Looking to 2011. There have been plenty of  Top Moments of 2010, but these typical end-of-the-year retrospectives have been short on 2011 predictions. N. Anthony Coles, president and CEO of Onyx Pharmaceuticals, offers his list:

  1. An escalating legal battle over the constitutionality of President Obama’s healthcare reform legislation.
  2. Implementation of the pharma tax, which is expected to raise $2.3 billion a year, and will target branded prescription drug sales of more than $5 million to Medicare and other government programs.
  3. Rethinking biopharma and physician relationships in light of the implementation of the Sunshine Act in 2012.
  4. Increased use of adaptive trial design and how/if the FDA will address this new approach to clinical development.
  5. As the economy continues to recover, will the IPO window open up?

Best of mid-gizmos. Medgadget picked its favorite products from 2010, which include: the GE V-scan Portable Ultrasound, retinal implant, Hemolung Respiratory Dialysis and General Purpose Pathogen Detector. Oh, yes, and the iPad.

Best (worst?) of healthcare PR. Gary Schwitzer lists some of his least favorite pitches and freebies from healthcare PR professionals this year: chocolate-raspberry flavored Resveratrol nutrition bar; National Chocolate Shake Day and a free sample of a colon-cleansing/detoxifying product all make the list.

Dealflow and more. Pyng Medical, which makes trauma and resuscitation products, has raised $600,000; Illinois’ Akorn sold its Akorn-Strides joint venture product portfolio to Pfizer for $35 million.
