Too much tort reform? President Obama promised a bipartisan effort on reforming medical malpractice. But now Republicans are fighting off challenges from within their own party over a federal bill that would cap pain and suffering damages at $250,000. Two Texas Republicans worry the law could take precedence over existing state caps in medical malpractice awards.
Employers: Do nothing but do something on healthcare reform. Nearly two-thirds of employers want the healthcare reform law repealed. However, an only slightly smaller percentage believe change was long overdue. Nearly 70 percent want some part of reform to remain.
Lilly CEO: R & D is broken. Eli Lilly’s John Lechleiter: “Our industry is taking too long, we’re spending too much, and we’re producing far too little. Even as we rebuild our R&D engine, we must build an environment where pharmaceutical innovation can thrive.”
Cosmetic surgery increases. The 13.1 million procedures in 2010 were a 5 percent increase over 2009. The top five cosmetic surgery procedures were: breast augmentation, nose reshaping, eyelid surgery, liposuction and tummy tuck.
Dealflow and more. Anacor Pharmaceuticals and Medicis Pharmaceutical have agreed to a $160 million deal to develop acne drugs; Marina Biotech raised $5.1 million; stem-cell detector Fluidigm has raised $75 million.
