GE Healthcare acquires Minneapolis-based MRI company

A Minneapolis-based MRI company has been bought by General Electric Healthcare. Steady State Imaging was acquired for an undisclosed amount.

SSI is based on the Swift technology developed at the University of Minnesota by which tendons, ligaments and other tissues can be seen during an MRI. That kind of visualization is not available in conventional imaging methods.

“The fact that a startup company based on University of Minnesota technology is being acquired by an industry leader like GE Healthcare is tremendous news,’ said Tim Mulcahy, vice president for research at the University, in a statement.

For GE, the acquisition expands the company’s MRI business, it said in the statement.
