It looks like Medical Mutual has the cornhole version of Miami Heat swagger.

Last year’s champions of the MedCityNews.com Medical Cornhole Tournament said they’re coming back to defend their crown. “We have to set a new record and win this two years in a row,”  said Alan Skotko, who along with Jonathan Horton makes up the Medical Mutual team.

Will anyone in the medical industry play the role of the Dallas Mavericks? The MedCityNews.com’s Medical Cornhole Tournament and picnic will start at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 18 in  Gateway Plaza in Cleveland between Progressive Field and Quicken Loans Arena. You’ll get a little time to size up the competition before the games begin at 5 p.m.

Each team costs $25, but it is free to attend. You can register through Constant Contact.

Last year, 50 teams and 150 people came out to network. This year, we’re planning for a robust field of 64 teams from hospitals, trade groups, medical startups, equity investors and service providers who make up Ohio’s healthcare industry.

Medical Mutual had an amazing run last year, showing non-LeBron come-from-behind clutch play  to take the title. For good measure, they also crushed insurance industry rival Kaiser Permanente by at least 15 points.

Skotko answered a couple of other questions about this year’s tournament.

On advice to their competition: We recommend the three Ps: ‘Practice,’ ‘Practice,’ ‘Practice.’ ”

On Kaiser Permanente: “Are they even going to show up, ( just kidding )? Just to be generous, we’ll probably let them double their score from last year.”

The tournament has another amazing set of sponsors that include Downtown Cleveland Alliance, STERIS, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Ohio State Medical Association, Benesch and MedBed Connect.

Additional sponsorship packages are still available. Contact MedCity Media to either reserve a team or inquire about sponsorship opportunities.
