Birth control recall. Pfizer Inc. (NYSE:PFE) has recalled about a million packets of birth control pills because of a packaging error that could lead to unplanned pregnancies in women who use them. According to Pfizer, an inspection error left some packets out of sequence or with the wrong number of placebo and active tablets. Lo/Ovral-28 tablets and generic Norgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol tablets with expiration dates from July 31, 2013, to March 31, 2014, were effected.

Pfizer last issued recalls in March 2011 when it recalled its painkiller Embeda because of formulation problems and two other drugs because of mislabeling.

New Dendreon CEO. There’s a new Dendreon CEO: John Johnson, former CEO of Savient Pharmaceuticals. His appointment comes after a tough year for the Seattle-based company, after its anticipated drug Provenge hasn’t lived up to sales hype.

Drug addresses cause of cystic fibrosis. The first drug known to treat an underlying cause of cystic fibrosis, Kalydeco, won FDA approval on Tuesday. It works by fixing one of the main proteins associated with CF in patients with certain gene mutations.

Legislation for startups. President Barack Obama handed over a legislative package to accelerate small business growth to Congress on Tuesday as part of the Startup America initiative. Inside the legislation are proposals to eliminate taxes on capital gains for investments, provide a 10 percent tax credit for companies that create jobs or increase wages, and halt country-specific immigration caps to bring more high-skilled workers into the workforce.
