Northeast Ohio Medical University is planning $130 million worth of expansion in the next few years, including a new research and education facility as well as the medical school’s first-ever on-campus student apartments.

Much of NEOMED’s growth at its Rootstown, Ohio campus will be fueled by enrollment gains as the college adds more medical and pharmacy students. NEOMED also plans to open an on-campus program for high school students.

Add it all up and NEOMED’s enrollment could nearly double to about 1,550 by 2016, the Akron Beacon-Journal reported.

The first phase of the project involves a $42 million research and education facility for which NEOMED has already broken ground.

The next phase involves constructing student apartments as well as a 150,000-square-foot wellness center.

NEOMED will fund much of the expansion via bond sales but is also looking for some private investment.

Established by the Ohio Legislature in 1973, NEOMED is a state medical school that partnered with the University of Akron, Kent State University and Youngstown State University. Cleveland State University later joined the group.

Until last year, NEOMED was known as Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy or NEOUCOM. The Ohio Legislature and Gov. John Kasich had to approve the name change before it could become official.
