Cleveland Clinic patient becomes ‘ridiculously photogenic surgery girl’

May 25, 2012 10:15 am by | 11 Comments

A Cleveland Clinic patient who posted a picture of herself while in the hospital for an operation to remove 60 percent of one of her lungs has become a popular Internet meme.

The 28-year-old woman, whose name is Rachel and uses the Reddit name WhosThatGirl_ItsRach, was staying at the Clinic for surgery to treat congenital emphysema.

After Rachel shared her photo, another Reddit user dubbed her “Ridiculously photogenic surgery girl” and posted the image along with the caption “Lose 60% of her lung .. Wins 100% of my heart.” Since then the meme has been repeated and posted more than a hundred times with different captions, ranging from “Loses one lung, steals a million hearts” to “Gets spongebath from janitor.”

Nonetheless, Rachel apparently enjoyed the attention, posting: “I don’t get hit on all the time (maybe because I don’t like leaving my house if I don’t have to) and I feel pretty average. People have been saying so may nice things about me the last few days. I’ve never felt more beautiful. Thank you :)”

The “surgery girl” meme follows the earlier Ridiculously photogenic guy meme.

Best wishes to her! It's a hard road fighting serious illness, but the Internet brings comfort from many; I've had 23 surgeries the last few years, mostly brain and spine, and my blog and online friends have brought me through many a difficult day. I don't know what I'd do without the Internet, being basically home-bound, and all the more challenging of losing a career because of it, and caring for two small children. My best to all in the same boat. --Too Much Brain to Contain  http://chiarian.blogspot.com

I love this sort of story...we don't see enough attention given to things like this. People being kind to people - imagine that!  Hopefully this helps her in getting through what seems like a pretty scary ordeal.
