A new video just in time for the approaching Halloween season depicts Uncle Sam as a OBGYN physician as part of a campaign against Obamacare health insurance. It’s unmistakably creepy and that’s the intent behind the video by Generation Opportunity, a conservative non profit with staff who previously worked for the Republican party.

It’s an odd choice to focus attention on gynecology and present it as the lead up to a physical exam. If the message is, don’t let Uncle Sam do your medical exam, how would it be any less unsettling if Uncle Sam were replaced with a state symbol? State legislators have done more to interfere with the decisions women make with medical staff and discussions they have with them than the federal government on issues such as abortion and other reproductive matters.

It’s interesting the group didn’t use a primary care physician setting, but it wouldn’t be as emotionally fraught. Physical exams are intimidating as it is without adding to the fear factor the way this video does. There’s plenty of room for debate on Obamacare and its pros and cons from the type of insurance options open to consumers them to access to physicians to the long-term consequences of exacting penalties on hospitals for readmissions.

I realize Generation Opportunity aims its political messages at young people but this video is immature and is more interested in shock value than its message.
