One of the complications of fluctuating blood-glucose levels that can happen with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes patients is blurred vision.  In 2010, 3.9 million adults diagnosed with diabetes reported trouble with their vision, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Eyeglass company Adlens believes its manually adjustable lenses can help address this complication and formed a partnership with the American Diabetes Association this summer

Adlens’ Emergensee glasses can be adjusted to accommodate nearsighted and farsighted users. It sees diabetes as a particularly relevant area. Why? Because its eyewear is designed for short-term use. Each lens can be independently adjusted so anyone can set them and immediately see, according to its website.

Its technology uses two wave-shaped polycarbonate plates that are able to slide across one another. The power of each lens can be varied by moving the plates relative to one another. The company was founded in 2005 and its headquarters are base din Oxford, England.

Diabetes is the leading cause of new blindness in the US among people aged 20 to 74. In addition to diabetic macular edema, it can also cause diabetic retinopathy.
