A company that’s created the first robot-assisted flexible endoscopic platform for surgery has raised a nice lump sum – Massachusetts devicemaker Medrobotics has raised $20 million. The dollars will be used to pursue commercial launches across Europe, and pursue the nebulous waters of U.S. regulatory approval.

The company’s endoscope is meant to enable minimally invasive procedures throughout the body – particularly difficult or impossible places to reach. It has an on-board visualization that “contains multiple open device channels to accept a variety of third party surgical and interventional instruments,” the company says.

“It extends the capability of surgeons to look and reach around corners and operate in hard-to-reach and confined spaces,” CEO Samuel Straface said in a statement. It’s meant for use in advanced transoral surgeries, including robotic and laser microsurgery procedures, he said.

The company’s received a CE Mark or its Flex System and Flex Retractor, and says it’s met all FDA requirements to distribute the latter in the U.S.
