Apple wants its new highly-anticipated watch to be compatible for medical research, possibly harnessing the data of some 700 million iPhone users worldwide and creating apps to align with the just-announced ResearchKit.

Apple Insider reports that Apple executive Jeff Williams said the new ResearchKit tools will grab data from both apps and HealthKit. Users will be able to opt in and share data with researchers and Apple won’t have access to the data.

The ResearchKit will be open source and available next month to the general public. In the immediate term, five apps built with the research tool by Apple and other partners will be available in the App Store.

Apple teamed up with numerous medical research facilities to create the new feature, including the development of an app designed for Parkinson’s research in collaboration with the University of Rochester, Xuanwu Hospitlan and
Capital Medical University.

Other apps included one designed for diabetes research, with Massachusetts General Hospital, an asthma app with Mount Sinai Hospital and Cornell Medical College, a cardiovascular disease app with Stanford University and the University of Oxford, and lastly a breast cancer app designed with the UCLA School of Public Health, the Dana-Farber cancer Institute and Penn Medicine, according to Apple Insider.
