The definition of ‘old’ depends on who you ask

Each year UnitedHealthcare surveys 100 centenarians to find out their opinions on health and wellness.

The 10th annual UnitedHealthcare 100@100 survey found that centenarians and 10-year-old kids have very different ideas about what is considered “old.”

Each year, UnitedHealthcare surveys 100 centenarians to find out their thoughts on health and well-being. This year they included the kids in honor of the 10th anniversary.

On average, those over the age of 100 think that 87 is when someone can be considered old. But the youngsters on average think 46 is old. These results aren’t necessarily surprising, pretty cute actually, and they put into perspective what it’s like to be looking forward in time as opposed to looking back.

It’s pretty remarkable to live past the age of 100, and many of them feel pretty good for their age. More than half, 52 percent, said they feel younger than they actually are. In fact, many of them reported feeling more than 20 years younger than they are. They also reflected back on notable ages when they were at their best in different ways.

On average, the centenarians felt that they were:

  • the most attractive at age 31;
  • the most energetic at age 34;
  • the happiest at age 44;
  • the healthiest at age 46;
  • the wisest at age 49; and
  • the most content at age 56.

Also in the survey, the centenarians revealed that they believe positive attitudes are directly correlated with good physical health.

“Year after year, we hear from centenarians that there is a correlation between healthy aging and a healthy mindset,” said Rhonda Randall, D.O., chief medical officer of UnitedHealthcare Retiree Solutions. “It’s a good reminder for us all to take care of our mental, emotional and social health — in addition to our physical health.”

Both those over 100 and the 10-year-olds agree on average that relationships with family and friends are a large part of staying positive and maintaining mental health.

They disagreed, however, on which celebrity they’d like to have dinner with. Centenarians overwhelmingly chose Betty White, and the majority of 10-year-olds chose Taylor Swift.
